A long-time fixture of both the US and Brazil’s music scenes — both as a collaborator with New York guitar legend Yonatan Gat and as co-founder of São Paulo psych-funk combo Garotas Suecas — Sessa debuts his solo work for the first time in 2019. His songs are sung in a sensual, laidback Portuguese recalling Caetano Veloso, with a visceral longing that is universally accessible. His simple yet lush arrangements have a confident restraint that evokes Leonard Cohen and Devendra Banhart, with melodic flourishes not unlike those of Tom Jobim. Entrancing backing vocals rise and fall around Sessa’s intimate singing, while minimal, deep percussion grooves throughout. The effect is transcendent, dramatic and sensual all at once.
The Eternals
The Eternals
Chicago fixture the Eternals first joined forces with saxophonist Nick Mazzarella in 2012 to develop the group's sweeping, large ensemble suite, Espiritu Zombi. Since then, Mazzarella and core members Damon Locks (vocals/electronics/kalimba), Wayne Montana (bass) and Areif Sless-Kitain (drums) have continued to give shape to uncommon sounds as an agile, stripped-down quartet. Mazzarella's soprano saxophone soars above raw samples, hypnotic loops and snaking grooves as the group continues to explore new sonic dimensions.
