Chicago Jazz String Summit
Over the course of 3 evenings live performances will entertain audiences and serve to build community amongst improvising string players as well as encourage and inspire a new generation of improvising string musicians. Chicago has been key to the development of the some of the most recognized string players in the history of jazz and improvised music such as Stuff Smith, Eddie South, Leroy Jenkins, and Johnny Frigo, all of whom have left a profound and inspiring body of work. It is the mission of the CJSS to recognize outstanding jazz string players--past and present--and encourage the future. Each year the summit will recognize the contribution of a jazz string legend.

The CJSS will honor the life and work of Akua Dixon this year. The CJSS official venue partners are Constellation, Elastic Arts, The Hungry Brain and Arts Club Chicago.
Stirrup is Fred Lonberg-Holm, Nick Macri and Charles Rumback. The Chicago trio first played together as "the shimmering rhythm section of the Horse's Ha," (Time Out Chicago), a group featuring vocalist Janet Bean of Freakwater and Eleventh Dream Day, and decided to form their own trio in 2009 to explore deep grooves, moody harmonies and extended structures. A true collective, the genre-defiant trio all write and arrange for the band with influences as varied as the extensive list of bands and musicians they have worked with.

"Pieces of blues slip out, rock is hinted at, as are hypnotic folky soundscapes. Stirrup coats American roots music with a layer of avant sound delivered with a pleasing infectious groove... " — Mark Corroto, All About Jazz
