Lucas Gillan's Many Blessings
Lucas Gillan's Many Blessings
Lucas Gillan’s Many Blessings has spent the past decade refining their unique group sound, melding melodic compositions, free-wheeling improvisations and insistent grooves, and playing for audiences at Chicago venues including the Green Mill, Constellation and the 2018 Chicago Jazz Festival. Their new album, Chit-Chatting With Herbie, celebrates the music of underrated pianist and composer Herbie Nichols, and will be released on January 3, 2019, Nichols’ 100th birthday. The Many Blessings album is a track-by-track re-imagining of the 1956 Blue Note album Herbie Nichols Trio. Drummer and composer/arranger Gillan was inspired to arrange Nichols’ music for his piano-less quartet because of the common thread he felt with his own music — swinging tunes permeated by an oddball sense of humor and experimentation. Nichols died in 1963 of leukemia, never having earned the recognition he deserved. His music has gradually gained more attention by musicians and audiences in the decades since his death. Many Blessings is proud to help celebrate Nichols’ centennial and spread his utterly unique music to more ears. Many Blessings is made up of Gillan on drums, Quentin Coaxum on trumpet, Jim Schram on tenor sax, and Daniel Thatcher on bass.

Originally from Long Island, NY, Paul Giallorenzo is a Chicago-based improviser, composer, producer, and sound designer using piano, synthesizer, keyboards, and electronics in a diverse range of contexts with a wide array of Chicago and international musicians in improvised, avant-jazz, experimental, and electro/acoustic music, performing regularly locally and throughout North America and Europe. His work can be found on the Chicago-based Delmark Records and Austin-based Astral Spirits labels, as well as various other imprints including Leo Records (UK), Not Two Records (Poland), and 482 Music (NY). Paul is also a presenter, organizer, and co-founder of the music venue/art gallery Elastic Arts, producing hundreds of creative music concerts and art events in Chicago since 2001. He has studied and played the music of Herbie Nichols in the past and is excited to take part in his centennial celebration.
